Virginia
The gold pyrite belt, and a written permission requirement.

Where is the gold in Virginia?
The Virginia gold pyrite belt through Spotsylvania, Louisa, Fluvanna, Goochland, Buckingham and Orange counties, along the upper Rappahannock and James drainages.
Virginia produced gold commercially from the 1830s until the Civil War drained the labour out of it, and briefly again in the 1930s. The gold pyrite belt runs north east across the Piedmont, through country that is now farm, forest and commuter belt. It is the least worked of the eastern belts and the one where written permission matters most.
What is the ground like in Virginia?
Fine placer gold in the creek gravels, with sulphide rich lode ground behind it. Virginia clay is heavy going and the gold is small, which is exactly why the ground has not been picked over the way the Carolina belt has.
Do you need permission to prospect in Virginia?
Written permission from the landowner is required for prospecting on private property in Virginia, and on non-navigable water the adjoining owner holds the streambed. That means a creek crossing private land needs the same written permission as the field beside it.
On state land the decision sits with Virginia Department of Energy, and a permit is usually involved. On private ground the owner decides, and since most gold bearing land in Virginia is private, that is the conversation that matters.
Does permission to be there mean the gold is yours?
No, not on its own, and this is the part that catches people.
Permission to be on the land is not automatically permission to take minerals out of it. Mineral rights can be owned separately from the surface, and the FieldFinders search agreement covers metal detecting rather than panning, sluicing or any form of extraction. If you are prospecting rather than detecting, write it into the agreement in terms, and ask the owner whether they hold the mineral rights.
Get it in writing first.
Free permission form, no account, nothing stored. It covers metal detecting as standard, so write panning or sluicing into it in terms if that is what you are doing.
Write the agreementChecked September 2026. Not legal advice, and a page is not a permit. The line between recreational panning and mining is drawn by equipment and disturbance, and it differs by state and sometimes by county. Confirm with Virginia Department of Energy before you work any ground that is not private land you have written permission for.
