Dahlonega, 1829, and the mint that ran until the war.

Where is the gold in Georgia?

The Dahlonega Gold Belt through Lumpkin, White, Union and Cherokee counties, with the Chestatee and Etowah rivers and their feeder creeks running out of it.

The Dahlonega rush of 1829 was the first substantial gold rush in the country and it emptied the Cherokee Nation off the land that produced it. A federal mint operated in Dahlonega from 1838 until 1861. The belt sits in the north Georgia mountains, and the ground that produced most of it is now a mix of private holdings, state land and national forest.

What is the ground like in Georgia?

Placer gold in the river gravels and saprolite over quartz veins in the hills. North Georgia ground is stony and the gold is fine, so it rewards patience and a good deal of water over a small amount of material.

Do you need permission to prospect in Georgia?

Prospecting on state land needs a permit from the Department of Natural Resources. On private ground it is the landowner, and on national forest the Forest Service rules apply, which are not the same thing again.

On state land the decision sits with Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and a permit is usually involved. On private ground the owner decides, and since most gold bearing land in Georgia is private, that is the conversation that matters.

Does permission to be there mean the gold is yours?

No, not on its own, and this is the part that catches people.

Permission to be on the land is not automatically permission to take minerals out of it. Mineral rights can be owned separately from the surface, and the FieldFinders search agreement covers metal detecting rather than panning, sluicing or any form of extraction. If you are prospecting rather than detecting, write it into the agreement in terms, and ask the owner whether they hold the mineral rights.

Get it in writing first.

Free permission form, no account, nothing stored. It covers metal detecting as standard, so write panning or sluicing into it in terms if that is what you are doing.

Checked September 2026. Not legal advice, and a page is not a permit. The line between recreational panning and mining is drawn by equipment and disturbance, and it differs by state and sometimes by county. Confirm with Georgia Department of Natural Resources before you work any ground that is not private land you have written permission for.
